Japan’s Miyu Yamashita clinched her first Major title on Sunday with a two-stroke victory at the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl.

The 24-year-old closed with a two-under-par 70 to finish on 11 under for the tournament, two shots clear of compatriot Minami Katsu and England’s Charley Hull, who both carded final-round 69s to share second.

Yamashita, who became just the third Japanese woman to win the event, joins Hinako Shibuno (2019) and Ayako Okamoto (1984) on the honour roll. The win comes just a day after her birthday and marks the biggest title of her career.

“To win such a historic tournament in front of these amazing fans is an incredible feeling,” she said. “The support pushed me through and I’m so grateful.”

Yamashita began the day with a one-shot lead and held off strong challenges from Hull and South Korea’s Kim A-lim. Hull closed the gap to one with birdies at 12 and 14, but bogeys on 16 and 17 ended her bid. Kim faded with a double drop on the 7th.

Yamashita steadied herself after a shaky third-round 74, producing clutch birdies at the 8th and 9th to regain control. Her bogey-free 65 on Friday had set up the winning position, and she finished the job with a composed display on Sunday.

Elsewhere, England’s Mimi Rhodes produced a highlight with a hole-in-one at the par-three 5th, when her ball deflected off another on the green and dropped in.

Yamashita’s victory is her first on the LPGA Tour and makes her the fourth Japanese Major winner in the past two years.

South Africa’s Casandra Alexander closed with a final-round 75 to finish on five over par and in a tie for 4oth, with countrywoman Ashleigh Buhai a further two strokes behind.
